11. Saving Bavikonda
INTACH Visakhapatnam Chapter is putting in all its efforts to protect the Bavikonda Buddhist Heritage Site, which is located approximately 15 Kms north of the city. There are proposals by the local development authority to develop mega housing projects very close to the heritage site, in violation of the prevailing laws protecting the such important heritage sites.

Archaeological excavations carried out at this site during 1982-87 brought to light Buddhist Sangharamas that flourished from 3rd Century B.C. to 3rd Century A.D. These finds have great importance as they are distinctly different from the Buddhist finds elsewhere. The discovery of the relic caskets of Lord Gautham Buddha from the Maha Chaitya of the site from all four cardinal points in diagonally absolute alignment, a little away from the ayaka platforms, opens an entirely new mode of consecration of the relic caskets in a Stupa. In this regard, the chapter has already written to the Hon. Chief Minister of the state and also to the Secretary, Dept. of Culture, Govt. of AP and is awaiting their response.
