Timeline

The Visakhapatnam Province consists of a beautiful picturesque land scape surrounded with hilly tracts that situated in the Northern part of the Madras Presidency. In 1907, Visakhapatnam was the largest district having an area of 17,222 square miles and it was also the most populous district of the Madras Presidency. Consequent on the formation of Orissa Province with effect from 1st April, 1936, there has been a radical change in the geographical figuration and size of the district.

In course of time, due to later consequences and formation of new districts in this province, some parts were allotted to Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts. Thus, the largest populous district of Visakhapatnam, of the old Madras Presidency, has been gradually reduced to the present size.

Visakhapatnam district has a continuous history from times immemorial. Several evidences of pre-historical cultures are noticed in this district. From periods of stone-age, existence of human culture is noticed at Marigavalasa, Lankelapalem and nearby places. Coming to the historical periods, almost all prominent dynasties, beginning with Satavahanas either held sway or struggled hard to bring this district under their control. Thus, Visakhapatnam had a very significant history.
